Lawrence Wayne Burgess
Lawrence Wayne Burgess, 92, of Hudson's Corner near Marion Station, died Sunday April 4, 1999, at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury.
He was born April 27, 1906 in Glen Moore, Pa., a son of the late Arthur G. and Ella Gaugler Burgess.
He was a graduate of Downington High School in Downington, Pa., and received a degree in electrical engineering from Drexel University in Philadelphia. He was employed by General Electric in Philadelphia until moving to Maryland in 1945. He owned and operated Burgess Country Store at Hudson's Corner for 27 years and was also a farmer and poultry grower.
Following his retirement in 1974, Burgess devoted all of his time collecting memorabilia from the Eastern Shore, which he displayed in the Eastern Shore Early Americanna Museum and Country Store at Hudson's Corner.
He is survived by his wife of more than 62 years, Gladys Hudson Burgess, at home; two daughters and their husbands, June and Kenneth Bell and Starr and Maurice White, all of Shelltown; two granddaughters and their husbands, Krista and Greg Tull, Salisbury and Patti and Alan Butler, Shelltown; two grandsons, Dean White, Bethesda, Md., and David White, Shelltown; one great-granddaughter, Kayla Tull of Salisbury and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by three sisters, Cordelia Bond, Rahway, N.J., Hannah ______, _______, Fla., and Dorothy ______, ______, N.C. He was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters; Arthur G. Burgess, John L. Burgess, R. Oliver Burgess, Beatrice Burgess and Marjorie Burgess Smith.
A graveside service and interment will be held today (April 7) at 11 a.m. at Rehobeth Presbyterian Cemetery in Rehobeth. The Rev. Philip Morris will officiate.
